Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, with an area of 130,000 km2.
It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Fonseca (and El Salvador on the other side of the gulf) and Honduras; and to the south by Costa Rica. It is also surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The capital is Managua and its metropolitan area has about 2.2 million inhabitants.
There are about 7 million Nicaraguans in the country, of which a large part of the population is mestizo. Nicaraguan culture maintains folkloric, religious, gastronomic and musical traditions influenced by Spanish culture but enriched with notable Amerindian and African elements.
The main language is Spanish, but English, Creole, Miskito and Garifuna are also spoken.
